New Mexico’s former Senate President Pro Tem Manny Aragon will learn his sentence today, reports KOB TV. After pocketing $600,000 during the Metropolitan Courthouse construction, he may face a five-and-a-half year prison term and up to $2 million in fines.

And the Standard Based Assessment test looms for students of Albuquerque Public Schools, reports KOAT today. Students in grades 3 through 8 and high school juniors taking the test will show education officials how their schools are performing. Shortfalls in certain areas of the test can call for complete restructuring of schools.

No one is safe these days, not even lawyers. The New Mexico Business Weekly reports the uncertain job market faced by law school graduates. Law has often been considered a prestigious and secure career field but has felt the strain of the recession alongside other markets just the same. One problem: the state hiring freeze. Expected to last well into 2010, the hiring freeze takes several government legal jobs out of the picture completely. A large part of the strain for recent graduates is the need to pay back huge law school loans.

KRQE reports today in other strange economic news, you can own a piece of Maui for only $9.99. After having trouble selling off a large section of land due to the economic climate, Menehune Land Sales LLC decided to sell the property square foot by square foot. Don’t get cute and try to buy just enough beach-front property to assemble a tent, the company says the sales are merely for novelty purposes and that the land is protected from any kind of development.
