Denish urges Richardson to sign death penalty repeal

Lt. Gov. Diane Denish is urging Gov. Bill Richardson to sign the death penalty repeal on his desk. Richardson has until today to decide whether or not to sign. The Senate passed the bill on Friday.

“Today I urged the Governor to sign legislation ending the death penalty in New Mexico,” Denish said in a statement.

Denish said that everything must be done “to bring to justice” those convicted of murder.

“Therefore, I support replacing the death penalty with a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole. If you’ve committed murder, you will be behind bars the rest of your life, no exceptions,” Denish said. “I will continue working with our police officers and prosecutors and with victims’ families to make sure justice is served.”
