The outrage over the bonuses given to the insurance company AIG has forced members of Congress to take action. U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich, D-Albuquerque, signed on to a bill, HR 1527, that is designed to recoup the money.
“It is beyond outrageous that the very people who brought AIG to its knees and helped create the current economic crisis are scheduled to receive hundreds of millions of dollars in bonuses while tax dollars keep their company afloat,” Heinrich said in a statement.
The bill, which would only apply to companies that the government owns at least 79 percent of, would increase taxes on bonuses. The taxes on the bonuses would be 60 percent.
“While my constituents are making sacrifices and working as hard as ever to get past this financial crisis, I have absolutely no sympathy for corporate executives already making exorbitant salaries,” Heinrich said. “This bill will make right what AIG refuses to do – enough is enough.”
The lead sponsor of the bill is U.S. Rep. Gary Peters, a freshman Republican from Michigan.
