I think that your approach about what's happening in the Northeast is flawed. You mention the whole region yet you only discuss what's happening in Vermont. Just this afternoon, Governor Douglas bolstered the state's opposition to gay marriage by announcing he will veto the bill should it pass the state house. Will gay marriage be legalized in all of New England by 2012? Probably not but a lot depends on how well Republicans do in future elections there. A major reason why gay marriage chances have progressed in the Northeast is that the Dems are in such firm control there. Where the Republicans hold sway, gay marriage isn't even an issue. The Dems have made a lot of gains in legislatures in 2006 and 2008 so this is what has given birth to it - not really through a major shift in popular opinion. For instance, the only reason New York is being watched as a place to legalize gay marriage is that the Dems control everything. If the GOP wins back the governorship there next year, it's simply not going to happen.

Of course, New Mexico Democrats showed that gay marriage is off limits even in many Democratic-controlled purple states.

Compare and contrast; one of my high school english teachers drilled that one.
Compare and contrast: Slave rights and gay rights; the contrasts are easy, the comparisons are profound. Slave marriages were not legally honored either. They could not create and sign contracts and what is marriage mostly (legally speaking) but a huge contract with thousands of rights and responsibilities.
Navanethem Pillay, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights spoke there last year saying, "That just like apartheid laws that criminalized sexual relations between different races, laws against homosexuality are increasingly becoming recognized as anachronistic and inconsistent both with international law and with traditional values of dignity, inclusion, and respect for all".
Apartheid: A system of laws applied to one category of citizens in order to isolate them and keep them from having privileges and opportunities given to all others.
Stop gay apartheid.
