Thank you for writing this article. I wonder what are the facts on DVR ? I am in the 11% that received food stamps trying to eat of $5.00 a day. I have been trying to get DVR to help me for 1 year now they stonewall at every request and opportunity They could care less about a successful employment goal. They are required to help a disabled person to train for employment but area managers are corrupt, petty making the system highly abusive experience.
My experience at DVR has been that New Mexico will not invest in its talent in order to make improve its economic development and my story is the perfect example. I have to request a fair hearing just to get a manager to make a decision .
Have you seen any of the stimulus money? Where is it and How is it being spent especially when the citizens of the State are suffering

State labor leaders warned about this on these same pages in November:
http://newmexicoindependent.com/10900/guvs-appr...

The warning could be summed up by the title of a rock song: "Don't Crash the Ambulance"

The state has a long history of building eligibility barriers to public assistance in order to save pennies. For example, how are we doing with the Governor's pledge (made over 3 years ago) to insure every child under 5?

At the moment when the need for public services began to rise, the Governor's high-income appointees froze the hiring of low-income public servants. For those state workers who could be helping the poor get access to benefits, the stimulus has already "disappeared into some dark hole" : taken away by HB 854.

An excellent article detailing how the State of NM continues to balance its budget on the backs of the poor and the working class. An associated issue is the difficulty of getting the Human Services Dept to release data regarding how it operates. The taxpayers deserve to know what's being done to poor people in our name. Yet the HSD, led by its lead attorney Paul Ritzma, has stonewalled at every opportunity, and led the efforts to defeat legislation that would open state agency records up to the public. There are bills pending before the guv right now that would give the public better access to these data (HB 130 and HB 544). The tragedy would be for the federal stimulus funds to disappear into some dark hole of administrative overhead--one imagines pay raises for exempt employees while caseworkers deal with exploding caseloads--while the poor go unfed. More than a tragedy, it would (or should) also be criminal.
