Bernalillo County sheriff’s detectives have charged a Metropolitian Detention Center officer in connection with a fight that left an inmate in a vegetative state, reports the Albuquerque Journal. Rosalyn Juanico allegedly used prisoners as her personal “enforcers,” the story said.

For those of you who do not subscribe to the paper, here is an excerpt:

Officer Roslyn Juanico, 23, was charged with intimidation of a witness. Sheriff’s detectives also charged inmates Jesus Cordova, 23, and Keola Tommy Kaula, 25, in the March 12 beating that seriously injured Avery Hadley, 47.

Investigators said Cordova stomped on Hadley’s head as many as 20 times inside a pod of inmates supervised by Juanico. Hadley was in protective custody at the time but was allowed to be around as many as 12 other inmates of similar classification.

There were 21 inmates in his area at the time of the beating, according to court records.

Jail officials said Thursday that Juanico has been placed on administrative leave with pay while they investigate the incident.
