your article lacks a fundamental understanding of the new mexico corrections system. you continue to write in the past, our state prison system is one of the best in the country. Quite frankly, in this state, private prisons help stabilize the system. furthermore, private prisons in this state have to follow the same rules as the state prisons. Those regulations and policies are rooted in the Duran Consent Decree that was created by attorneys such as Mark Donetelli and Peter Cubra. To quote a prison official before the infamous 1980 riot and bring it into 2009 context is very misleading and irresponsible. the state system provides substance abuse counseling, education programs and vocational programs.inmates learn how to drive commercial vehicles, make furniture and a host of other vocations. you should pay a visit to a state prison, before writing uninformed commentary. If you would like to discuss this further, i would be happy to educate you.
Gerges Scott, Former Communications Director NMCD 1999-2002

"Right after both wars, however, a conservative mood hit the state. Job training and job placement were seen as coddling prisoners."

WTF???????

Do you just have to make crap up, you know that statement is erroneous and unprovable, why try and slide that in there?

Oh my, now you've really gone off the trolly tracks - to the left, of course.

Why do you believe that there no bad people, only a bad system? Why is it that the people who are in prison always seen as the victims, while we in the society they preyed upon portrayed as mean and uncaring?

We already spend $trillions attempting to educate people, only to have them drop out of school at a dismally high rate in New Mexico. A life of crime is apparently less demanding and a more fulfilling choice for some, regardless of whose life they destroy. Besides, many criminals are well educated, had good opportunities, and still decided that their life choice was the right one for them. I believe that, in your mind, a "prisoner" is that kid in a poor neighborhood, with a broken family and no prospects. What about the kid who had it all, great education, brilliant and creative mind, good upbringing, but who still chose to become an identity thief, an embezzler, or (excuse my sarcasm), a politician. Should we paid to reeducate them too?

You make it sound as though we overtaxed and beaten down citizens are the real criminals here. "Hate to sound sappy"? No, I don't think so.
