Marriage is a sacrament. If you don't get married in Church you are just living together. You should not have sex. You may not care what the Church teaches but you will ultimately have to answer to God. On that day you will certainly wish you had cared.

““I don’t think the Catholic Church wants to deny anyone on any civil rights,” Father Stephen Imbarrato said in a recent interview. But, he quickly added, “the Catholic Church also believes that all sex outside of sacramental marriage is immoral.””

Does the Catholic church really think that people who don't get married in a church aren't really married, and shouldn't have sex? And why do we care what they think?

The Church should either keep its nose out of politics, or reveal its donors and follow all other procedures recently passed that apply to non-profit “advocacy” groups. One of these days our nation really will have separation of church and state (for a change).

By the way: the irony of lectures regarding sexuality from priests.

Father Stephen Imbarrato is quoted as saying, “I don’t have a problem with anything that’s worked out that doesn’t put Catholic priests where they have to perform a sacramental marriage for homosexual couples."

It astonishes me that people actually think this is an issue!

Church, mosques, and synagogues have NEVER been compelled to conduct marriages for ANYONE. This is a non-issue! There is absolute religious freedom in this matter. Mosques have never been FORCED to marry Baptist couples, synagogues have never been FORCED to marry Wiccan couples, and Catholic cathedrals have never been FORCED to marry Atheist couples.

Sometimes I wonder if the only reason why people like Father Imbarrato make statements like this is to scare a naive public.

Those who believe that marriage is sacred usually choose to be married in a religious ceremony. Gay couples may or may not be making a religious or moral statement; though most Christian denominations do no recognize such commitment, some do. Regardless, Gay couples simply wish to be legally bound to each other by law. We wish to have all the same privileges of any lifelong couple.

If the government still considers "marriage" to be a religious designation rather than a legal one, it has no business making any laws concerning that institution. If, as confirmed by its actions, the government believes "marriage" to be a legal contract, it has no business denying that contract to any two people, no matter what their gender might be.

After all, it isn't the CHURCH that bestows the legal benefits and responsibilities of marriage. GOVERNMENT does that.

While I appreciate your continuing coverage of this issue, It would be nice to read a piece on the views of groups besides GLBT lobbyists and the Catholic Church on this issue. How about talking to leaders or members of groups that mostly are involved in other progressive issues? I think it's key to find out what others think about this important civil rights initiative. Just thought.
