The first candidate forum, sponsored by AFSCME Council 18, in the Albuquerque mayoral race comes early — on April 29th, the same day we find out who officially qualifies for the ballot. The state’s largest public employees union typically endorses in races for City Hall. All candidates must turn in 6,574 signatures from registered Albuquerque voters by April 29th to qualify for the ballot.
Incumbent Mayor Martin Chavez, former state Senate Pro Tem Richard Romero and current state Rep. Richard Berry are all expected to make the ballot. The three are also the only candidates to qualify for public financing.
Rudy Serrano, who will self-finance his campaign, is also listed as a participant, but he is considered by many to be a longshot to make the ballot.
The AFSCME Council 18 Candidate Forum will begin at 6:00 p.m. next Wednesday. There will be free food and drink before the debate, from 5:00 to 6:00.
The forum will be held at the AFSCME union hall at 1202 Pennsylvania St. NE (map).
So how will it work? According to AFSCME:
Each mayoral candidate received a questionnaire asking his or her position on various issues. The forum will discuss the answers to those questionnaires. Attendees will be afforded the opportunity to ask questions of their own.
