Democracy for New Mexico blogs about the passing of expanded hate crime legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives. New Mexico’s freshmen Democratic lawmakers — Martin Heinrich and Ben Ray Lujan — were in the support of the legislation in order to end violence motivated by “small mindedness” and “intolerance,” but Harry Teague was absent for the vote.

According to the post, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force sees this as a step in the right direction for achieving substantive federal hate crimes legislation.

Meanwhile, Tracy Dingmann of Clearly New Mexico writes about the Wall Street Journal’s editorial singling out New Mexico Attorney General Gary King for “pay-to-sue” practices. King’s response to the story won him yet another jab by the conservative WSJ, writing, “some public officials are touchier than others.” This back and forth exchange has created quite the media stir.
