The non-profit Web site Stateline.org took a look at Twitter as a political tool recently.
The Web site, which focuses on state-level governing, says there are fifteen governors who use the microblogging service. This includes New Mexico’s governor, Bill Richardson, who tweets from the @GovRichardson Twitter account.
The Richardson Twitter account began when Richardson wrote :
Meeting with Bernalillo County Commission candidates shortly
The Powerline article says, “Most governors’ pages offer fairly bland news releases, but a few offer occasional personal commentary. Will Franklin, director of new media for Gov. Rick Perry’s re-election campaign, said the Texas Republican looks at Twitter on his Blackberry and tweets personally.”
Congressman Ben Ray Lujan has also dipped his toe in the Twitter pool. He tweets to his 591 followers at @RepBenRayLujan. Like Richardson, Lujan’s account last sent a tweet on May 1:
Recent veterans should apply for education benefits beginning today. you can visit one of my district offices to apply: http://tiny.cc/az1qR
Sen. Tom Udall used a Twitter account during his Senatorial campaign, but his 1,105 followers haven’t heard a peep from his twitter account since October 20.
State Rep. Brian Egolf is on Twitter at @BrianEgolf, while Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez sends his tweets from @MartyChavez. The Democratic Party of Bernalillo County also has a Twitter account at @DPBC.
It isn’t just Democrats in New Mexico either — Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White can be found on Twitter at @DarrenPWhite.
And, of course, the New Mexico Independent can be found at @NMIndependent.
