The Washington, D.C. City Council voted this morning to recognize gay marriages performed elsewhere. The Washington City Paper provided live updates from the meeting where former mayor and current councilor Marion Barry spoke out against the resolution, only to be told by another councilor: “Your position is bigoted.” Follow the debate here.
The resolution was originally passed as part of a consent agenda, meaning a list of items that the councilors would normally pass without debate. But after the vote, Barry, who had previously said he would oppose the measure, asked to reconsider the issue. After about 45 minutes of discussion the council took another vote, but the final result was the same.
D.C. joins the state of New York, which recently voted to recognize gay marriages performed elsewhere, but does not perform them.
The District currently allows domestic partnerships which grant many, but not all of the rights of marriage.
