Clovis Mayor Gayla Brumfield apologized for asking city officials to forward an e-mail invite to a political fundraiser. The fundraiser was for Lt. Gov. Diane Denish, who is running for governor in 2010.
“I didn’t know that I couldn’t do that. I guess it’s in the personnel policy,” Brumfield said to the Clovis News Journal in an interview on Tuesday afternoon.
“I sent it out,” the mayor continued. “It’s my fault, I’m learning. I don’t know what else to say. I won’t do that again.”
“The only thing I can say at this point is that it was brought to my attention and it appears to be a violation of our city personnel policy,” City Manager Joe Thomas said to the Clovis News Journal.
Brumfield is not subject to the policy, as she is an elected official. But those she sent the e-mail to are city employees, so the e-mail was deemed inappropriate.
The invite in question was for dinner with a suggested donation of $100.
The Republican Party of New Mexico issued a release condemning the action, which said, “It is inexcusable that Mayor Brumfield is using her elected position and city personnel and resources to promote her political views.”
