Obama’s budget eliminates abstinence-only sex education funding

President Obama’s 2010 budget would end nearly all federal funding for abstinence-only sex-ed, and launch a new teen pregnancy prevention initiative using “evidence-based” programs. The full details of the budget were released today and teen pregnancy groups quickly siezed on this major change.

Although New Mexico has refused to accept federal abstinence-only funds for sex-ed, community organizations received $1,349,883 in fiscal year 2008 to conduct abstinence-only programs.

But the Obama administration clearly rejects those programs, saying, “This budget redirects funds from the Community-Based Abstinence Education program to teen pregnancy prevention programs that have been shown to be effective. A 2007 evaluation of abstinence-only programs showed no impact on participants’ likelihood of engaging in sexual activity.”
