You are wrong to inexorably link teen sex and damaging “emotional baggage” (EVERYone has emotional baggage), and future broken families. The 'research' you reference may establish a correlation but not a causation. “Academic”, you may suggest, but no – a very important point. If we truly want to understand the complex nature of human sexual and familial relationships, we must avoid jumping to conclusions, blaming various value systems (other than our own) and relying on this evidence to establish culpability.

That goes for you to babyfatt. There are “religious fundamentalists” who believe that sex outside of a marriage (hetero, of course) is a sin against God. While I do not share their values, I have met many who hold them dear but do NOT expect everyone else to live by them.

Data? The data shows that there are all kinds of processes by which human youth evolve into sexually active adults. Some married, most not. Some with same sex partners. Some are careful about condom use and contraception. Others, not so much. The data shows that more information does NOT increase behavior, number of partners or risk taking. The data suggests that access to relevant services likewise does not increase risky behavior.

I suggest that we, as a society, need to learn how to honor this diversity and have open, honest discussion about sexuality in order to improve our 3rd world sexual health statistics.
