Albuquerque Journal reporter Charles D. Brunt has a really interesting story on today’s metro page about Mayor Martin Chavez’s efforts to retain the New Mexico Air National Guard’s 150th Fighter Wing. For decades, the 150th’s pilots stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base have flown what the military calls F-16 Fighting Falcons. Others simply call them the Tacos. What’s most interesting about the story is how the possible loss of the 61-year-old fighter wing could, Chavez worries, endanger the future of the entire base. My eye jumped out at the $150M per plane price tag for the would-be replacement for the F-16s. There’s also a curious bit of Vermont-New Mexico competition and intrigue playing out here. Stay tuned.
In other news, the Santa Fe New Mexican reports on changing budget plans for Los Alamos National Lab, which may slow construction of some projects, while increasing funding elsewhere.
On the prepare-for-the-worst beat, border officials are apparently preparing for the extremely long-shot possibility that the Mexican government could collapse under the weight of persistent drug violence and corruption. The federal government is currently working with state officials to decide how to handle border violence and possible a refugee exodus from Mexico, according to story on KOB-TV.
