Will he or won’t he? I wrote last night that I didn’t think Kilmer would run after telling New York magazine that he would not.
But, according to a writer at the Daily Beast, Kilmer is keeping his options open.
Thus, at Tammy Haddad’s lunch, he almost, but not quite, gave cause for great relief to New Mexico’s Lt. Gov. Diane Denish, who so far is unopposed in next year’s Democratic primary.“Can I call you governor?” Haddad teased the actor. “No,” Kilmer demurred. “Are you going to run?” Haddad persisted. “Probably not,” Kilmer said. Not by any means a Sherman-like statement, but rather the standard locution of a potential candidate not ready to make a decision, let alone an announcement, and keeping his options open.
Something else I learned from the Daily Beast piece? One of Kilmer’s advisors, Jim Lake, is a Republican media strategist who “is a veteran of the Ronald Reagan juggernaut.”
“He cares about the environment and talks about how they need better public education,” Lake said to the Daily Beast. “He did some campaigning for Obama, and Bill Richardson has been a friend of his.”
I looked through Lexis and didn’t find any media reports of Kilmer campaigning for Barack Obama. Just reports of Kilmer and a Ralph Nader rally in Denver which he ultimately did not attend.
Despite this, and donating money to Nader, Kilmer said that he voted for Obama.
Lake introduced Kilmer to Democratic media consultant Steve McMahon who worked for Howard Dean on his presidential campaign. McMahon is the one who has been shepherding Kilmer since the actor expressed interest in running and, in fact, was with Kilmer at the brunch where Kilmer made his “probably not” statement.
Public Relations “guru” Ken Sunshine also has been advising Kilmer closely. Sunshine also represents Ben Affleck, an actor who has been long-rumored to make a run at political office someday.
Now I just don’t know what to think.
