‘Repeal the Repeal’ raises more than $30K

Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White was always critical of the death penalty repeal, which Gov. Bill Richardson signed on March 18 of this year. Less than 24 hours later, White was already looking at ways to overturn the repeal and ended up starting a political action committee (PAC) to “Repeal the repeal.”

Th Repeal the Repeal PAC raised $30,000 last month, according to Steve Terrell in the Santa Fe New Mexican.

An Albuquerque group dedicated to bringing back the death penalty in New Mexico has raised more than $30,000 in the last month, according to documents filed with the state this week…
The group wants to gather petitions to put the question of whether to reinstate the death penalty on the ballot. “The people should have a voice in this,” White said Tuesday.

A big chunk of the money came from Darren White’s own PAC, which donated $18,000 to the Repeal the Repeal PAC.

The PAC spent more than $15,000, mostly on TV ads.

Of course, it isn’t clear if such a ballot initiative would even legally be allowed on the ballot. The state constitution forbids repealing laws that have to do with criminal justice, and White told the New Mexican that he is waiting on an opinion from the Secretary of State’s Office.
