Ashleigh Brilliant is credited with saying, “I either want less corruption, or more chance to participate in it.” I think this typifies most New Mexico politicians that run for office denouncing corruption and promoting ethics. Sadly, however, they quickly become educated about “the way we do business” in New Mexico and become co-opted by the very system they want to change. And ethics reform is laughable here when you have a democratic governor admitting publicly that he remembers people who contribute to his campaign, and that donors get “a little bit of an edge.” I can't see Republicans doing much better, and Democrats are so inflicted with the disease that no cure is visible on the horizon. Well, we can hope New Mexicans have had enough, but I’m not too optimistic things will get any better.

I think the corruption issue is overrated. I think New Mexico voters are sick of campaigns that offer nothing but negativity and condemnation. The reality of the matter is the NMGOP and the GOP don't have any solutions or even new ideas to offer.

Think back on Darren White's failed campaign last year for US Congress. Did the good sheriff ever run an add that wasn't a negative attack on Heinrich? Did he ever offer a single realistic economic solution beyond more trickle down bs? And in the end, White was soundly defeated by Heinrich despite the fact that he was more charismatic, more eloquent, and he didn't look stoned in every televised debate. I honestly wondered if Heinrich was on drugs every time I watched him debate.

I voted for Heinirch twice and I will almost certainly support him again in 2010. But if the NMGOP wants to remain a political party, I would suggest they drop the corruption and focus on offering a viable solution to the dilemmas confronting the state.

What does Camuñez mean by "getting past the...polarizing issues"? They actually aren't that polarizing if anything most republicans and a good number of democrats agree with the GOP position. If the GOP does not stand up for the unborn and marriage they will continue to lose voters not gain voters. Remember Obama ran opposing same sex "marriage" and on reducing abortion and I believe that is how he was able to win over moderates. IF the GOP doesn't they are dead.

This makes no sense:

"That candidate, McCulloch said, should oppose labor’s card-check legislation and a proposed cap-and-trade program to regulate carbon emissions."

Does McCulloch believe that Governors will have a vote on legislation going through Congress now in the form of the Employee Free Choice Act and cap and trade?

I thinkk you are absolutely correct.

The problem with this plan is that its the Republicans along with Democrats like Linda Lopez and Tim Jennings who have been fighting ethics reform at every turn. How can they claim any moral high ground on this issue?

All Lady D needs to do is talk about how they would have had ethics reform if the Republicans had wanted it.
