“I’ve got a job.”

That’s what Janet Napolitano, head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security – and former governor of Arizona — said to New Mexico press today, according to the Albuquerque Journal. She was replying to rumors that she may be the replacement for retiring U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice David Souter.

Earlier, the Associated Press reported that Napolitano is on a short list for the vacancy on the nation’s high court.

Napolitano, who grew up in Albuquerque and graduated from Sandia High School, spoke at two commencement ceremonies today at the University of New Mexico.

From the Albuquerque Journal:

“Obviously, I’m flattered by that kind of suggestion, but I’ve got a job,” she said to the media before her remarks to UNM graduates. “I don’t speculate on those things. That’s the President’s choice. He’s got many great people to choose from.” She also said she has not spoken with President Barack Obama about the position on the court.”Obviously, it’s an honor to be mentioned.”
