There is no need for Dr. Pacheco to provide stability at NMSU. NMSU was stable and progressing splendidly under Dr. Cruzado. It's a power play, pure and simple. If the Regents had any idea about the campus community, they would have left well enough alone. Of course, since three of the regents are from northern New Mexico, it might take a bit of work to understand what is going on down here. If the regents really wanted stability, they would appoint an interim from within the university to replace Dr. Cruzado--that's the tradition, and it works just fine. It would not cost an additional $325K, either. I hope there is a real investigation of the shenanigans here.

Manuel Pacheco is a solid Richardson man. Here is what Governor Richardson said about him in 2003 as a possible candidate for UNM President. "I believe ....Manuel Pacheco deserved to be interviewed for the position," Richardson said through a spokesman Tuesday. "But the decision not to interview them was made by regents appointed by the previous (Gary Johnson) administration. I disagree with the decision!" It is clear that Dr. Pacheco will loyally serve Governor Richardson. This selection of new President is all about politics!
