Bailout failure: Election year politics or a real revolt?

By | 09.29.08 | 3:57 pm

Was their vote against the Wall Street bailout today just pure election year politics on the part of Tom Udall and Steve Pearce?

An analysis by the Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza suggests maybe so, at least in part.

Here’s the kicker of that analysis:

It’s no coincidence then that of the 205 Members who voted in support of the bill today, there are only two — Reps. Chris Shays (R-Conn.) and Jon Porter (R-Nev.) — who find themselves in difficult reelection races this fall. The list of the 228 “nays” reads like a virtual target list for the two parties.

So what do you think? Was it just election year politics–one of those moments when the American public actually has some sway on Capitol Hill? Or was it a real revolt based on what these legislator’s really believe?
