TODAY’S TOP STORIES: Stimulating the N.M. economy… with energy

For months and months, we’ve heard where federal stimulus funds are going. KOB-TV is reporting that we’re about to see the start of these funds in action. The projects expected to be seen first are those coming from the $5M allocated in Albuquerque as energy block grants — be sure to check out the video.

Over on KOAT-TV, we know that the Memorial Day weekend brought an unexpected number of visitors for a time when people are have difficulties finding the money to travel.  Visitors’ trips seemed to boost morale, while going easy on the family wallet.

On the jobs front, mass layoffs have decreased nation-wide from March to April, so notes the New Mexico Business Weekly. And the Carlsbad Current-Argus is reporting on the continuing layoffs in the oil industry, despite the fact that oil as risen to $60 a barrel.  Officials are quoted as saying that an increase to $70 to $75 a barrel would get the oil industry back on its feet, otherwise drilling is too costly and layoffs will continue.

Lastly, Santa Fe New Mexican’s Sue Vorenberg posted a great article on the MIND Research Network’s work in creativity and IQ.  Their research adds a new spin and credibility to the significance of IQ levels.
