rainbow-gay-artA meeting called to “discuss, promote, and strengthen the movement for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender equality in New Mexico” is being billed as “historic” by its organizers.

The statewide summit will be held this Saturday at the University of New Mexico Law School.

“This summit will be made up of students, families, friends, and neighbors, all of whom believe that all New Mexicans deserve equal treatment under the law,” Robert Adams, organizer for the summit, said in a press release.

Asked who is organizing the summit, event spokesman Michael Huerta responded via e-mail to NMI:

While several organizations have supportive roles in the summit, including EQNM (Equality New Mexico), the summit was created, implemented, and encouraged by grassroots organizers from across the state. EQNM was one of the organizations that had a supportive role in the process. Others included: New Mexico PFLAG, the Santa Fe Human Rights Alliance, Albuquerque Pride, Santa Fe Pride, the Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and the Human Rights Campaign.

A domestic partnership bill was rejected in the New Mexico Senate this year by an 8-vote-margin, despite passing the House and securing the strong backing of Gov. Bill Richardson.

“I’m proud that people from all communities in New Mexico will be here for this historic event,” Adams said.
