It seems as though Hillary Clinton backers may be coming around to a drama-free convention.
Teri Holland, one of New Mexico’s committed Hillary Clinton delegates, attended a meeting earlier today in which fellow Clinton delegates discussed the strategy for voting for the New York senator on Wednesday.
“But we’re trying to get the point across that Hillary Clinton wants to make sure that when we leave this convention we’ll all be unified,” Holland, the New Mexico delegation’s designated Clinton whip, tells the Independent. “And people will get there in many different ways.”
Holland describes Clinton’s embrace of Barack Obama’s candidacy as a “sign of a mature leader. “We are all Democrats,” she adds. “We want to make sure that Democrats win in November.”
Obama spoke in Iowa earlier today, dismissing the suggestion that both Bill and Hillary Clinton we’re fully on board his campaign. But the New York Times did report this revealing bit of insider intrigue:
Still, Mr. Obama declined to say whether he believed it was a good idea for Mrs. Clinton’s name to be placed in a formal roll call at the Democratic convention this week. He said the details were being negotiated between his campaign manager, David Plouffe, and a top adviser to Mrs. Clinton.
“I am confident that everything will be just fine on Wednesday night,” Mr. Obama said, turning to another reporter for a new question to change the subject.
For her part, Holland wouldn’t say exactly what should be expected come Wednesday when Clinton’s name will be formally placed in nomination, but she did say the Monday afternoon meeting gave Clinton supporters “a chance to do a little venting… we just feel [Clinton] needs to be honored for what she did.”
Holland also acknowledged that convention watchers “might see a few crazies,” but adds that she didn’t see a single one at the whip meeting.
