rail-runner-picYesterday, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express celebrated a significant milestone: Its two-millionth rider.

The Rail Runner began in 2006 between Belen and Bernalillo and has since expanded to Santa Fe as well.

The lucky two-millionth passenger was Valerie Gladden, a Motor Vehicle Clerk who boards the train in Los Lunas and rides to Santa Fe for her job.

“I get a lot done on the train; sometimes I read, or pay bills,” Gladden said after being presented with prizes. “I’ve even met some of my best friends on the train. It’s great – everybody should give it a try.”

Lawrence Rael, executive director for the Mid-Region Council of Governments, said, “It’s amazing how many people like Valerie are finding the Rail Runner to be a good fit for their daily commute. “

U.S. Sen. Tom Udall called the occasion an “an exciting development” and said that he “will continue to encourage the development of viable public transportation options like the Rail Runner for New Mexico.”

The Rail Runner currently has 4,500 daily riders.

Transportation Secretary Gary L. J Girón said Gladden “is just one of many New Mexicans who has realized the convenience and economic benefits of the Rail Runner.”

Gladden won a prize package which included a pass to ride the train free for one year, a scale model of the New Mexico Rail Runner Express, a two millionth passenger certificate as well as a Hotel Santa Fe vacation Package.
