Bobby Unser unloading on city councilor Michael Cadigan isn’t the first time that part of the legendary car racing Unser family has clashed with a politician.
Last year during the election, Al Unser Sr. sued Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White for a 2006 arrest of himself and his brother Bobby Unser for not heeding orders from police officers.
For an analysis of the police reaction on the 2006 arrests, I recommend reading this post from retired law enforcement officer Mark Bralley.
In 2008, when Al Unser Sr. sued for his arrest, KOB-TV reported:
Indy racing legend Al Unser Senior has filed a federal suit against Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White, three of his deputies and Bernalillo County commissioners claiming his rights were violated when he was arrested in 2006.
Unser was taken into custody at the perimeter of a crime scene. Deputies allege he was failing to follow orders.
Unser claims that authorities knew he had done nothing wrong and that his rights were violated when authorities elected to put him on trial.
Unser’s suit says that he’s seeking compensation for the violation of his rights, court costs and compensation for injuries. He also wants his record expunged.
White was in the midst of an unsuccessful run for Congress at the time against Martin Heinrich.
