Newly minted congressional hopeful Jon Barela spoke to Politico and, like 2008 Republican candidate Darren White, continued his attack on freshman U.S. Rep. Martin Heinrich as “too far left.”
“I don’t think Martin Heinrich is a reflection of the district. This is still a center-right seat. Martin Heinrich is too far to the left on budget issues, spending issues and national security issues… and I fit the district better,” Barela said in an interview with Politico.
Heinrich, an Albuquerque Democrat, won the First Congressional District seat in 2008 against White, the Bernalillo County sheriff, with 56 percent of the vote. President Barack Obama received 60 percent of the vote in the district.
Before Heinrich, the seat had never been held by a Democrat.
Barela is a businessman from Albuquerque. He is a former vice chairman of the Republican Party of New Mexico, past president of the Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce and former member of the Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education.
