U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman has been a senator since 1983. In 1982, he defeated the Republican incumbent, Harrison Schmidt, and has won every election since then.

Since then, he has risen in the ranks to currently being the 13th-ranked Senator and 9th-ranked Democrat by seniority. The Silver City Democrat chairs the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. So it was a bit of a surprise when PBS Nightly Business Report host Susie Gharib referred to Jeff Bingaman as “John Bingaman.”

Bingaman — his full name is Jesse Francis Bingaman for the record — was the a guest on the “A Congressional Difference of Opinion,” series. Bingaman was to discuss a pending climate change bill.

Bingaman’s son’s name is John.
