Hey frostyguy! I totally agree that Wasilla is suburban. But my sister doesn't live there....she lives in Chugiak. That is rural!
Thanks...I would come back in a second if it didn't take so darn long to get there!

Tracy,
I'm hoping you aren't considering Wasilla as "rural". because most of the world would consider it "suburban".
Whittier, definitely "rural".
And proportionately very few Alaskans use public transportation.

Just to set the record straight.

It's a big state, come on back and see the rest of it!

New Mexico was invaded and conquered by the United States. The "federal funding" we depend on is payment for the wrongs committed by the United States during the invasion.

I tell you people always have to try and find something wrong, even in a great piece like this. I appreciate knowing real Alaskans point of views (thank you Tracy) and not crap from their self-made mouthpiece. You can nitpick all you want, but the theme of this piece still holds strong, Alaskans are dependent on government services more than most states and it's mostly because how isolated they are. They probably could survive without that help, but I doubt it would be a comfortable way of living, and I'm sure the private companies there wouldn't take advantage of that fact either.

Interesting reporting. Most people don't know that Alaska was invaded by the Japanese during WWII (Google "Dutch Harbor"}, which was one of the reasons for pushing hard on the Alaskan Highway.

New Mexico is another State that depends greatly on Federal funding.

I wonder how Alaskans view our "Spaceport" in terms of a bridge to nowhere?
