Vice President Joe Biden praises New Mexico for quickly allotting recovery funds

Vice President Joe Biden praised the state of New Mexico today for quickly allotting the money received for highway and other transportation projects from the recovery bill passed by Congress and signed by President Obama earlier this year. States are required to obligate 50 percent of the funds by June 29.

All fifty states and five territories have met this goal, including New Mexico. New Mexico has obligated $143.3 million or 81.1 percent of the funds given to the state from the recovery act.

Biden said the goal is to get Americans back to work, and a large part of this are these road projects.

“By delivering on these projects ahead of schedule and under-budget, we have been able to do even more than we expected — create more job opportunities more quickly, with more dollars left over to put toward more projects that put people back on the job,” Biden said in a statement.

In the statement, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood added, “This is a testament to the fact that we’re putting money out there quickly and helping to get the economy back on track.”

New Mexico’s overall share will likely grow past $3 billion, and the highway projects are just a small fraction of that money.
