EMILY’s List endorses Diane Denish for governor

3603676513_79ed4ed1a9Lt. Governor Diane Denish was endorsed today by EMILY’s List, a political action committee that works to elect pro-choice Democratic women. Jonathan Parker, political director at EMILY’s List, said that Denish was one of only two gubernatorial candidates endorsed so far in the 2010 elections.

“What this means is that we’ve got 100,000 members. So [Denish] is up on our Web site, and those members are now directed to give money directly to Diane’s campaign through our Web site,” Parker told NMI.

Why did the organization act now, when the election is still a year and a half away? “Our name stands for ‘Early money is like yeast,’ so …we figured why wait any longer? Let’s get out in front,” Parker said.

So far, Denish is the only female Democrat who has announced she’s running for governor. EMILY’s List also supported Denish’s successful campaigns for lieutenant governor in 2002 and 2006.

EMILY’s List is one of the country’s largest political action committees. In the 2007-2008 election cycle it raised more than $43 million. Since 1985, it has helped elect nine governors.
