The Albuquerque Journal’s Dan Boyd has a provocative story in today’s newspaper about New Mexico’s drunk driving laws in light of yet another fatal head-on collision. While there have been numerous legislative efforts in recent years to toughen the state’s DWI laws, the latest tragedy will inevitably put those efforts under increased scrutiny.
But the most sobering factoid to come from Boyd’s story — for me, anyway — can be found in the story’s final sentence:
The average first-time drunken driving offender has driven drunk 87 times before being arrested, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
In less depressing news, the Taos News is reporting that the local school board has voted to give interim Superintendent Bobby Gonzales the authority to approve contracts up to $50,000 without going before the board first for review. Parsons Commercial Technology Group, a company contracting with the local school district, argues that such expedited approval is necessary over the summer when the board meets less often.
Also, KUNM is reporting that over 100 artists from over 40 countries will be descending the City Different for this weekend’s Santa Fe International Folk Art Market. The festival is in its sixth year, and per usual, a wide variety of art will be available for the discerning plaza shopper.
Lastly, if you happen to be in and around Gallup or Grants this weekend or early next week, you’ll be able to see the International Space Center just by looking up.
The space station is 216 miles above the surface of the Earth and traveling at a brisk 17,200 mph in orbit. Due to enormous new solar panels — reportedly an acre in size — the space station, according to the Gallup Independent, is now “the brightest man-made object in the sky.”
