Unemployed and on the Albuquerque City Council

By | 07.15.09 | 9:05 am

The economic plight of Albuquerque City Councilor Sally Mayer has been splashed across the pages of the Albuquerque Journal with the headline: “Mayer sued for $5,600 on Target credit card.”

The story itself has Mayer explaining that she’s unemployed and in the same straits as “a whole lot of people” looking for a job. The Target credit card balance got out of control, she said, due to late fees and other penalties.

For anyone who’s paid attention the past couple of years, it’s been clear that Mayer is not a well-to-do person, or even securely situated.  She famously went to work at Kmart during the holiday season a couple of years ago to make ends meet.

It’s rare to see an unemployed person who struggles to make ends meet on the council. As the Journal article notes, city councilors make $11,000 per year for the time they put into serving on the council, which is the body charged with setting policy for the city.

Because its a time-consuming position, the make-up of the council often trends toward self-employed professionals, people who work for companies or organizations that allow the person to take time off, or retired people.
