I thought this was overboard as well. GOK is the name of software. It's the stock symbol for another company. They really have no issue. And the fact that the school had it's name before they had rights to it, they have no standing either. Last time I saw a list, the GOK Museum pays a bunch of people six figures and this is what they spend time and publicity on? I saw in another piece that the new History Museum didn't even want to deal with GOK images because they knew they would have trouble….And they just lost a court case fighting with a financially strapped school (make em spend money on legal bills) over selling O'Keeffe paintings that they've owned a long time.

As a Santa Fe resident, it doesn't make me want to steer any visitors to the museum. I'll drive them up north to see the real scenery before taking them there.

Perhaps there's been another person in the US with the name Georgia O'Keeffe whose family wouldn't mind having a school named after her.

So the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum manager is upset at the school's use of “GOK” on school t-shirts? If we follow this rabid thinking, then we should stop referring to President John F. Kennedy as “JFK” and President Lyndon Baines Johnson as “LBJ.” These are honored — not defamatory — uses.

The Museum could have invited the entire school, embraced the use of “GOK” initials on student t-shirts, congratulated the children, made a big and positive news story out of it, and moved on. But no!

Instead, this negative story involving Georgia O'Keeffe's name — and dragging Santa Fe and New Mexico along with it — has now found its way into the world through the Internet.

The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum should be riddled with guilt. But in an organization that's driven to make money at any cost, targeting little kids must be a no-brainer. And to think the Museum didn't bother to visit or call the school, but chose an impersonal email to deliver its bomb. How unprofessional.

Let the Georgia O'Keeffe Elementary School be named for someone else. There are many deserving notables — whose names have not been entirely co-opted for money — for elementary students to embrace as role models.
