Former U.S. Sen. Harrison Schmitt: America must remain dominant in space

By | 07.20.09 | 1:36 pm

Harrison Schmitt, part of the last manned mission to the moon and one of just 12 people to have ever walked on the moon, told CNN on Saturday that he believes there should be more missions to the moon and more space exploration by the United States. Today is the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing.

The one-term Republican U.S. senator from New Mexico said the consequences of not remaining the dominant nation when it concerns space travel would be immense, especially if the Chinese become dominant in space travel.

“I think having a nondemocratic regime dominant in space would be disastrous for human liberty here on earth, but that’s a decision that this country is going to have to face here very shortly,” Schmitt said.

Schmitt also told CNN that he was selected because, along with being physically capable of space travel, he was a scientist.

When asked if he would have believed that his mission in 1972 would be the last by Americans for decades, Schmitt responded:

I frankly did not believe, did not even think that it would be a half-century hiatus before Americans were once again were considering going back to the moon and to go on to Mars. Unfortunately, that’s what happened. I must say, I’ve been very disappointed in that delay, but I think I understand it.

Schmitt held a seat in the U.S. Senate from 1977 to 1983. He was defeated by current U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman, a Democrat.
