The U.S. Senate voted 58-40 to cut $1.75 billion in funding for controversial F-22 fighter planes from a defense spending bill. Both New Mexico senators voted in the minority against cutting the funding from the bill.
The effort was the work of Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Carl Levin, D-Mich. But the measure was supported by Defense Secretary Robert Gates and President Barack Obama.
New Mexico’s two Democratic Sens. Tom Udall and Jeff Bingaman voted against stripping the funding and, as the Huffington Post noted, the votes seemed to be more along regional lines than ideological lines.
Of note, Tom Udall’s cousin, fellow Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., voted for stripping the funds from the bill.
