The Associated Press reports today on a recent study that looked into pollution  in the Four Corners area. According to the study, a reduction in coal-fired power plants and oil and gas operations would — surprise, surprise —  lower ozone pollution levels.

The state Environment Department’s Air Quality Bureau is looking at lowering emissions for both public health and environmental reasons.

In other environmental news, the Deming Headlight focuses on dust emission research as it relates to pollutant reduction. This new model will provide the data needed to evaluate health standards.

According to a KOB-TV story, U.S. Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M.,  is taking on drunken airline passengers. New Mexico’s junior senator is apparently trying to pass legislation that would stop drunk passengers from boarding planes by training flight personnel to recognize and deal with drunk or belligerent travelers. Around 10,000 “air rage” cases take place annually, a figure that has increased by 400 percent since 2000.

Meanwhile, the Las Cruces Sun-News has a story on a NMSU chile specialist who is making her way to the Food Network as a contest judge. Stephanie Walker judged the merits of green chile cheeseburgers for “Throwdown with Bobby Flay” after the popular celebrity chef took on a local New Mexican cook.

And lastly, here’s a story about a discrimination case in El Paso in which two men were allegedly kicked out of a restaurant for kissing. The Albuquerque Journal links to the 911 tapes of the Chico’s incident.
