Sen. Udall introduces meat safety recall bill

By | 07.31.09 | 8:02 am

First-term Senator Tom Udall introduced a bill that is designed to give more authority to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The bill would allow the USDA to initiate mandatory recalls of tainted meat.

Currently, the USDA cannot call for a mandatory recall for meat this is tainted, but instead must convince meatpackers themselves to call for a recall.

“When the USDA cannot get tainted meat off the market swiftly, all our consumers are at risk,” said Udall. “This legislation will give USDA the authority to act quickly and decisively to protect the public.”

Udall cited the fact that 5,000 people die each year from food-borne illnesses and 325,000 people need to be hospitalized each year from food-borne illnesses.
