Outside Magazine, a magazine dedicated to outdoor activities, has ranked Albuquerque as America’s sixth-best city. The rankings were based on “a city’s cultural vibrancy, economic well-being, and overall quality of life.”
Outside Magazine lauded Albuquerque for “a surplus of sunshine, mild weather, and easy access to trails, rivers, and mountains—like the 10,678-foot granite escarpment above town.” What set Albuquerque apart, Outside says, is that Albuquerque avoided the “circus-tent collapse of the housing market” and relative economic stability.
Taos made Outside Magazine’s list of best small towns.
For Taos, Outside Magazine wrote, “Picture Colorado. Now remove most of the people; sprinkle with artists, hippies, eccentric ski bums, celebs, and the occasional nuclear scientist and you’ve got Taos (pop. 5,800).”
In 2008, no New Mexico town made the list, but in 2007, Santa Fe ranked fifth and in 2005 Silver City ranked ninth.
