Heinrich, Teague on NRCC’s list of targets — among 70 House Dems the GOP aims to knock off

It should come as a surprise to no political observers that Congressmen Martin Heinrich and Harry Teague are on the target list of the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC). Both New Mexico Democrats are serving their first terms after winning the heavily-contested open seats in 2008.

In both cases, the incumbent Republican House member decided to run for Senate instead.

According to Politico, “The NRCC sent out an e-mail to supportive political action committees with the list of 70 seats it hopes to pick up next year.” And Politico writes that 45 of the 70 seats targeted are those of either freshman or sophomore representatives.

Unsurprisingly, the heavily-Democratic 3rd Congressional District, held by freshman U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján, is not on that list.

All three New Mexico seats already have GOP challengers. Former vice chairman of the Republican Party of New Mexico Jon Barela is taking on Heinrich in the Albuquerque-based 1st Congressional District, ex-U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce is trying to take back his old seat from Teague in the 2nd Congressional District, and libertarian-leaning Republican Adam Kokesh is opposing Luján.

Barela and Pearce were both named to the NRCC’s Young Guns program.
