Bingaman lays down the law on Facebook comments

Something that every politician says about using social media like Facebook is that it allows them to hear feedback from their state or district. But sometimes the commenters cross the line on the internet — as anyone who has followed a comment stream on YouTube knows.

So U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman‘s office sent out a message to those who have signed up to follow his fan page laying out a new commenting policy for his fan page.

It reads:

U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman encourages public commentary and welcomes facebook comments as vital components of a public forum. Commenters are welcome to agree or disagree with Bingaman’s perspective or official actions, as well as discuss them with other participants. As part of upkeep of this public forum, we reserve the right to monitor comments. We will not delete comments simply because their author disagrees with Senator Bingaman, his views or policies, or does not support his voting record.

However, the following kinds of comments are those we view as deleterious to this public forum, and will be deleted:

1. Comments that are threatening or abusive in any way to Senator Bingaman, his family or staff, or other facebook users. Please be aware that on the guidance of the U.S. Capitol Police, threats are reported to law enforcement.

2. Comments containing explicit or offensive language.

3. Posts that attempt to dominate a comment thread through repetition or bullying.

4. Comments whose only purpose can be to change the nature of the conversation.

We reserve the right to block any person consistently engaging in comments of this nature and to update this policy as needed.

Facebook comments are monitored and not viewed as official constituent contact. If you would like to receive an individual response, please contact my Washington office at 202.224.5521.
