Michelle Obama, students and her garden
First Lady Michelle Obama’s decision to plant a garden on the White House grounds has been an international “teachable moment,” with impact that reaches far beyond her back yard. Garden vegetable seed packets are selling like hotcakes, canning cookbooks are flying off the shelf, and everyone seems to be giving credit to Michelle.
The First Lady has used the garden as a backdrop for speeches and events at which she’s talked about such hot-button topics as obesity, food deserts, food security and the USDA’s Child Nutrition programs.
The Obama Foodorama blog, which has been tracking food issues in the 44th presidency, is convinced that the FLOTUS has become the de-facto leader of the nation’s healthy food movement:
The White House Kitchen Garden was the start of an unprecedented paradigm shift in our national conversation on children’s nutrition and health, on food and agriculture, on the role of cooking and nutrition education; and it’s a signpost for the Obama administration’s approach to these issues. Never before have we had a First Lady with a food policy agenda, and never before have we had an assistant White House chef–Food Initiative Coordinator Sam Kass–who has assumed a public role in nutrition and health education, and in creating that food policy agenda. And never before have we had a First Lady who actually has a “food policy team.”
It’s interesting stuff, no? I admit, I thought I was dialed in to this stuff, but I’m only just realizing now just how much of a foodie Mrs. Obama is.
