N.M. Central Labor Council endorses city council candidates

The Central New Mexico Central Labor Council, composed of public and private sector labor unions in Bernalillo County and Albuquerque, released its endorsements of candidates for city council in Albuquerque’s upcoming municipal election.

After inviting candidates to speak at their meeting on August 3, the council voted to endorse Councilor Ken Sanchez in District 1, Councilor Isaac Benton in district 3, Councilor Michael Cadigan in district 5, and Mike Cook in district 7.

All of are incumbents except for Mike Cook, who is challenging Councilor Sally Mayer. Ken Sanchez is running unopposed. No reasons were given for any of the endorsements.

Benton released a statement expressing gratitude for the endorsement, and saying he’s committed to worker’s rights:

“I am humbled and grateful for the CLC endorsement and I am committed to protecting the rights of workers and improving our working family neighborhoods,” Benton said in the statement.  “The importance of a strong middle class and the ability to help labor unions hold down crucial jobs for hard-working citizens here in Albuquerque is a primary focus of my service on the City Council.”
