As all regular readers of the New Mexico Independent should know by now, former White House advisor Karl Rove and former deputy chief of staff Harriet Miers gave behind-the-scenes testimony to the House Judiciary Committee. Now, Jason Leopold of The Public Record reports, they may be asked to testify publicly “sometime in the fall.”
Their appearance would mark the first time that senior Bush White House officials will testify publicly about a scandal that resulted in the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and other top Justice Department officials. Rove and Miers defied numerous congressional subpoenas seeking their sworn testimony over the past two years about the roles they played in the firings of the federal prosecutors.
The obvious New Mexico connection is, of course, the firing of former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias. Documents released by the House Judiciary Committee show that Rove was almost certainly involved in the process that eventually ended in Iglesias’ removal.
