Guv to commuters: If construction clogs traffic, you’ve always got the Rail Runner

Gov. Bill Richardson couldn’t help but play pitchman Tuesday for one of his high-profile projects, the Rail Runner Express commuter train.

Richardson was at a news conference near Tramway Boulevard to announce the start of a widening I-25 from the boulevard several miles north to Bernalillo. And it wasn’t lost on anyone there that state transportation officials were making a valiant effort to play down the potentially disruptive nature of construction on the state’s main north-south corridor.

Officials kept repeating the line about how hard they and the construction company actually responsible for the project would work to keep the disruption to a minimum.

When it was the governor’s turn to talk, Richardson, who isn’t shy about impersonating a stand-up comedian every once in a while, quipped: “For all those inconvenienced by the construction, take the Rail Runner.”

The line brought a rumble of laughter from the small crowd attending at the news conference.

The state’s commuter train travels from Belen to Santa Fe most days of the week, with few unscheduled stops due to congestion or construction.
