Homeless children population in Albuquerque has doubled — at least

The population of homeless children in Bernalillo County has more than doubled in the past couple of years, according to a report by KOB Channel 4.

A local organization that cares for homeless children conducted a survey that found approximately 900 children under the age of six in Albuquerque, and at least 1,100 in Bernalillo County without homes. The organization,  Cuidano Los Niños, says these numbers are double what they were just a couple years ago.

“There is a crisis in our community and the crisis is we have an increased number of homeless families with children under the age of 6,” Executive Director Dr. Jaime Tamez was quoted as saying.

This brings to mind a report issued in May stating that one in four children under the age of five in New Mexico go hungry on a regular basis. Plus, 98,000 children under the age of 18 in New Mexico are “unable to consistently access adequate amounts of nutritious food that is necessary for a healthy life.”
