Glad you noticed, Dr_Benway. I just logged on to recommend Quigley's "Money & Medicine" column in the Journal's Business Outlook today, Monday, Aug.24, page 9 - another excellent commentary - only to find that you beat me to it. Thank you.
Arthur Alpert

Quigley's on a roll - see 'For sake of argument, stick to the facts' in today's Business Outlook (http://www.abqjournal.com/biz/24221627347biz08-...) where he concludes "Congress and the president have handed us a chance to talk about what kind of health system serves the national interest. Let's not lose the opportunity by hiding from the facts behind comforting and nonsensical mythologies."

NMJR says "no rational person can believe health care reform will cut the deficit."
Most industrialized nations spend lots less on health care than we do and get better health outcomes. Most do that via single-payer systems, where the government insures everybody. (Some allow private health insurance on the margins.) Also, the governments in these countries dominate corporate interests instead of the reverse.
The U.S. could save tons of money (and yes, cut the deficit) by eliminating (or pushing to the sidelines) the private health insurance industry and ending welfare for pharmaceutical and medical equipment manufacturers.
Unfortunately, neither major political party will defy corporate power. So the health reform we get probably won't cut the deficit.
If that's what NMJR meant, we agree.
Arthur Alpert
