AP: PR firm owner Doug Turner to run in GOP gubernatorial primary next year

By | 08.21.09 | 4:36 pm

Albuquerque-based public relations firm owner Doug Turner has decided to take the plunge and officially announce his run for governor, the Associated Press is reporting. Turner, who has a history of running other people’s campaigns, will run as a Republican.

The New Mexico Independent’s Heath Haussamen reported last month that Turner had hired staff for a potential run at the state’s top spot.

He has experience in running campaigns, but not as the face of the campaign.

Turner was state director for former Gov. Gary Johnson’s first campaign in 1994 and manager of his re-election campaign in 1998. Turner was also deputy political director for Steve Forbes’ unsuccessful 2000 presidential campaign.

Johnson, of course, was a two-term New Mexico governor.

Turner joins Doña Ana County District Attorney Susana Martinez and state Rep. Janice Arnold-Jones of Albuquerque as announced Republican candidates, while former state Republican Party Chairman Allen Weh is still considering a run.

On the Democratic side, Lt. Gov. Diane Denish has announced she is going to run, while Senate Majority Leader Michael Sanchez formed an exploratory committee but has since been quiet on the gubernatorial front.
