Mayor Marty is very good at taking credit for things that others did, even things he worked agianst. Community arts organizations, the city council, and city employees really made these things happen. He was against the Arts Tax several years ago (along with the Chamber of Commerce), which would have trained and funded many small arts organizations.

Chavez is just now talking about the City promoting a SXSW-style music venue. And people actually applauded him for saying this? Wow, it must be political season! Why hasn't he promoted the idea in the past, or better yet, actually done something to make it a reality since he's had 12 YEARS in office. We had the Spring and Fall Crawls that were promoted by the Alibi and private sponsors, and all Chavez did was unleash the cops to make the event feel exactly NOT like Austin during SXSW. Gotta give him credit, though. He was the real pro up there when it came to dishing out the political spin.

While Chavez is supportive of “city controlled” venues, he's been busy trying to shut down every privately owned bar and club in this town. Not exactly good for us working musicians who obviously can't get by on the $50 earned to play under the gazebo in Old Town. The idea that Chavez is supportive of a large scale music festival, like SXSW, is laughable since it was his administration the shut down the Spring/Fall crawl. Those events were the closest thing this city had to a festival like that. Had they been supported by the city, we would already be on our way.

Good recap. While Sen. Romero and Rep. Berry did score a few points here and there, neither seemed to be aware that Albuquerque already scores among the very top cities for arts, film and media nationally on a regular basis.

Too bad Marty isn't equally supportive of the arts of all sectors of the community. There's an entire swath of youth who do graffiti art–more euphemistically known as aerosol art by some–that he's demonized as ghetto kids. He's incredibly classist.
